Assisted Living Community Checklist

During a pre-arranged visit to each assisted living community, get the answers to the following questions:

  1. Is the community location appealing?
  2. Is the outside of the building well maintained?
  3. Are the common areas clean and inviting?
  4. Is the floor plan easy to understand?
  5. Are the hallways and rooms designed to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers?
  6. Are staff members professional and approachable?
  7. Do staff members provide a care plan for each resident?
  8. Are staff members available 24 hours a day to provide assistance with activities of daily living?
  9. Does a nurse visit residents regularly?
  10. Are residents socializing? How do they like the community and the staff? Are there regular activities?
  11. Do residents appear happy?
  12. Are housekeeping and transportation services available?
  13. Are there emergency response systems in bathrooms and/or individual units?
  14. Are three meals provided every day?
  15. Is there a contractual agreement that details all services, fees, and admission and discharge policies?
  16. Are additional services available should they become necessary?
  17. What are the specific costs for services? Request an itemized list of charges.
  18. Are there any government, private, or corporate programs available to help cover the cost of care?
